Writing Update July 2026

I’ve been working on a new novel for the past few months. Currently I’d say I’m somewhere between one third and half way through the first draft, though it can be difficult to tell.

I know many authors plan their novels meticulously before sitting down to write the first draft. Personally I find that method can drain my excitement for the story. If I plan too thoroughly before I begin, then I feel as though I’ve already told the story. I get bored, and move on to my next idea.

My personal system for planning stories is a bit loose, but goes something like this:

  1. Initial idea / spark of inspiration. This is often a single sentence describing a character, setting or plot point. I’ll jot this down in my ideas notebook.
  2. Interrogate the idea. Come up with four or five bullet points for the plot and characters. Figure out the core conflict that drives the story forward. Importantly, this stage also involves coming up with an ending. If I do not know the ending of the story, then there is no point in trying to write it. Some ideas fail at this hurdle and I scrap them.
  3. Research and development. This includes research, world building, character development, and a more detailed plot structure. Not many ideas fail at this stage, but some get put on hold for long periods while I work on others.

By the time this is over, I’ll normally have a page or two of bullet points that outline all of the key plot points, and maybe another page or two of bullet points about the main characters and setting. This is the prefect stage for me to dive in and start writing the first draft. I know just enough to write the story, but not so much that I am bored of it, or start to doubt its robustness.

Writing the first draft can take a long time. For a short novel it takes about 3 or 4 months. Longer novels can take six months, or even a year.

When I began the novel I’m currently writing, I thought it would end up at about average length. It has already become clear that is not going to be the case. I’m just reaching the end of the first part of the story, and the draft is already the length of a short novel.

Many of those words will be deleted or revised in editing. But assuming the draft continues at this pace, it could easily end up being the longest I have ever written. I was hoping to have the entire draft finished by the end of August, but now I suspect it will be the end of the year. Perhaps even the start of next year, depending how life goes.

While it is frustrating when the first draft takes longer than expected, in some ways I’m quite happy about it. Until now I’ve always had more trouble with my stories being too short than too long. It’s nice to have the opposite problem for a change.

Until next time,

Ed

Writing and Life

In my opinion, that mindset of relentless grind is poisonous. Life is about more than making money, and you will do yourself (and your writing) a huge favour if you step back every now and again to enjoy it. Remind yourself why you do the things you are passionate about, and what you started doing them for. I can almost guarantee, it wasn’t for money.

Raw Meat Release Issues and Fallout

This is just another update on the status of my novel Raw Meat. Following months of technical problems with Amazon, I’ve decided to withdraw the book and find another way of distributing it next year.

None of this is Amazon’s fault, exactly. The process for registering ISBN numbers and releasing books is complicated, and I was doing it all for the first time. I made the mistake of registering the ISBN number several weeks in advance of self-publishing the book, and that seemed to cause some truly monumental issues with Amazon’s content review system.

I’m grateful for the help Amazon’s support staff have offered. Unfortunately, the technical issues started to get so serious that they were affecting my account, and I don’t feel confident releasing Raw Meat on Amazon any longer in case it results in me being unable to self-publish future projects with them.

There a couple of reasons I’m now postponing the release until next year. The main one is that I’m obliged to honour a 90-day period of exclusivity with Amazon. But honestly, even if I did not have to wait out the exclusivity period, I’m also just exhausted. This process has been stressful and demoralising, and I need a break for a few months before I try to take on the release process all over again.

I’m sincerely sorry to anyone who was thinking about buying the book and hadn’t gotten around to it yet. I will find a way to publish it next year, even if it’s just making it available to read here on my website.

In the meantime, I’m going to focus on my latest writing project and learn whatever lessons I can from everything that went wrong with this attempted release!

ebook launched

I had some good news today when I woke up to find that the Raw Meat ebook has launched on Amazon.

Unfortunately the ongoing technical issues are still preventing me from releasing the paperback version of the book. But the ebook release is great news nonetheless.

Once the technical issues with the paperback version have been resolved, I will probably try to promote the book more on social media and Amazon in an effort to get a few reviews. Until then, I’m treating this as a ‘soft launch’.

If you’re interested in reading the ebook, it is currently free to read for anyone with a subscription to Kindle Unlimited. For those without Kindle Unlimited, the ebook is available on Amazon for £3.99. Just search for Raw Meat by Edmund Axton on the Amazon app or site, and you should be able to find it.

Raw Meat Release Update

In my last blog I mentioned I was facing some technical challenges getting Raw Meat released. This blog is just an update on that situation.

The same day I published my previous blog, I had a bit of good news. The distributor sent me an email to let me know the ebook version had now been approved.

Despite the paperback version of the book remaining stuck in content review hell, I was relieved to know that at least the ebook would be released at the start of October. In fact, at the moment you can actually pre-order the ebook on amazon.co.uk. I even began preparing marketing material.

Unfortunately, today I had yet another email from the distributor to let me know that my account has been suspended. This is all still related to the technical problems. So one step forward and three steps back.

Still, they seemed able to resolve the issues with the ebook version, so hopefully they will be able to fix the issues with the paperback too.
